BACKGROUND

Frances was born as the oldest and only child to the Copeland family, a noble family with their family seat located in Southern England near the town of Strand, the manor house called Strand Manor. Her mother and father attempted to have more children, but couldn't conceive which was the great tragedy of Frances' early childhood, how her mother couldn't produce an heir. Finally, she became pregnant when Frances was 10, but the pregnancy was difficult and finally, her mother died from complications before the child could be born. After that, Frances' father began serving in the Royal Navy and was often away, finally getting killed by pirates in the Caribbean when Frances was 12. Suddenly having no parents and being the sole child to the estate, her father's immediate family deceased and her mother's family without claim, she was guided by her paternal great-uncle, Philippe Acart, by letter from the continent and their correspondence would develop over the next seven years.

Now, at age 19, she has just been to visit him at his château in France, when her party is attacked by the highwayman, Cecilia Rowe also known as "The Murderess". She kills all Frances' guards and is about to kill Frances, too, when she sees her coat of arms and recognises the family name, having just heard about her at the inn she's recently passed through. She decides to drive Frances' carriage back to the manor herself and take over the household to try and live in luxury "the last days of my life". At Strand Manor, she kills all the guards there, too, and for six weeks no one finds out what is going on, Cecilia forcing Frances to teach her how to live as a noble. During this process, the two fall in love, but when Philippe finally realises something is amiss, he has royal guards sent to Frances' home and as they find Cecilia there, she is apprehended and put under arrest, sentenced to death for her crimes.

And so, Frances has to come up with a plan to save Cecilia's life.
